Time for a little shopping…

I love to use student-made teaching materials in my ESL class. The items that we made this time were drawings of objects that my students were going to sell to each other. I understand that some parents find the use of     art in a ESL classroom as irrelevant or just a waste of time. I beg to differ. My students and I use that time to actually talk and sing. You’d be amazed at how much more relaxed children can be when they are in the middle of creating something. Singing becomes more fun and I get the time to question them about everyday occurrences. More than that, they are actually made to use the actual language (and phrases) that they would benefit from the most.

Here’s how my lesson went-

After we learned some typical phrases like:

“How much does this cost?”

“It costs # euros and # cents.”

and:

“That’s expensive!”

“That’s a good price.”

“That’s a bargain!”

I then had them practice naming all of the individual coins:

“Twenty cents, ten cents, one euro, two euros…”etc.

We then quickly moved on to adding up different sums and they really enjoyed showing off their ever growing math skills. I then asked them to pick out a particular item to sell and to then choose a price to sell it at. Working in pairs they took turns asking, “How much does this cost.” ” It’s costs # euros and # cents. ” Whereby their partner would answer,       “That’s expensive!” or one of the other phrases.

How did my students like this activity! Let’s put it this way, it was hard to get them to end the lesson. They were hooked.

Until next time!

Hello Everyone,

It feels like summer has arrived over here in La Ciotat and we’re celebrating by singing a new song that will welcome an Indian summer. This song will not only teach your children how to count from one to ten but it will also teach them some directional phrases too. If you don’t recognize the directional phrase part of the song it’s because I made it up :)

I’ve also included two short videos from Hoopla Kidz and Muffin Songs that portray two versions of our 10 Little Indians song. Gobo and I sure hope that you enjoy singing along!

See you all on Thursday!

Brush your teeth!!!

Gobo teethgobo teeth two

Bonjour!

Just Speak,

Danielle

Hello Everyone!

Everybody needs to brush their teeth don’t they? Even Gobo! During today’s Singing and Dancing Class at Petits Pieds Grands Pas we sang our new song by a man named Raffi. You can buy his CDs online and you can preview the “Brush Your Teeth Song” here on youtube.

Finally, I’d like to end this post with some pictures of our friend Gobo which were taken this very morning, right before he got to work brushing his little teeth.

Wait a minute… Does Gobo even have teeth?! Come to class and find out next week!!

Just Speak! – Danielle

Hello Everyone!

Halloween is just around the corner, why not have a little fun in preparation for the big day by making some easy window decorations? A paper plate, some colored paper, scissors and glue is all you’ll need. Then put your work on display with some string or patafix :)

For some extra fun, sing the “Pumpkin, Pumpkin” song by A.J. Jenkins and teach your child to say “eyes, “nose” and “scary smile”.
